Traditional Healers

What is traditional healing?

The Wixarika or Huichol people of Mexico are known as healers and wise counselors. Through many years of sacrifice and pilgrimage to sacred sites, followed by a traditional initiation, a mara'akame is able to bring deep healing to those seeking physical, spiritual and emotional help.

As in most indigenous traditions, Wixarika healing works with the root spiritual cause of illness, seeking to restore balance in our lives and connection with the energies of the sacred world. One does not need to have a manifested physical illness to benefit from this work.

Apprenticeship and Initiation

Randy and Linda apprenticed with Eliot Cowan, a Tsaurirrikame (or elder medicine person), for over 10 years. They were initiated as Mara'akate in 2016 under the auspices of Don Jose Sandoval de la Cruz.

They are now part of the Groupo de Tatewari (Grandfather Fire’s Group), who are Westerners initiated as mara’akate (traditional healers) in the Wixarika tradition. As people who grew up in our Western culture, these healers are uniquely qualified to bring this important and powerful traditional medicine to our people, with a deeply felt and lived knowledge of the disconnection and dis-ease of those living in our culture at this time.
